ABSTRACT

Taken together, the work gathered in this volume gives the reader a general idea of current inquiry by adventurous scholars in the field of movies and politics. They represent different approaches and foci, but they all share in common the conviction that something politically important goes on with and in the movies, and that these important processes can be understood. This collection demonstrates that able people are working on the question of what about the movies is political, but also suggests that scholars to come should pursue this field of inquiry further. For example, much of this volume has concerned itself with movies and politics with emphasis on the impact of politics on the movies. But equally valid is the question, what about politics is movie-made? Since Reagan, this latter question has become more urgent, since many of us suspect that our political expectations and images may derive from media experience such as the movies.
