ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the implications of profound change for urban access is explored. urban access gradually change from being transport dependent to information dependent. The IT revolution is already having far reaching impacts on every aspect of life, including urban spatial form. Technology to address the highway congestion problems faced by those able to travel to work also began to develop in the form of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). With each technological development introduced by the MTA such as Metrocards and count down clocks, it has gained substantial riders. Computerized traffic systems coupled with exclusive rights of way have led to the development of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, now operating in dozens of cities around the world, particularly in Latin America. Computer controlled traffic systems; simple combinations of mechanical sensors and large computers became the first line of defense in traffic management.
