ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on some of the most salient social media initiatives and campaigns created and distributed by women and queer youth to create more inclusive spaces within the immigrant rights movement. It examines the work of three undocumented Latina/o youth-led initiatives that resulted in content that was circulated widely, some even gaining notable visibility in mainstream and/or alternative media. Scholarship on DREAMers’ online activity illustrates that undocumented youth are cultivating a participatory culture through a transmedia format that spans traditional, alternative, and social media. The dreams of many of these youth, unlike those of many early DREAMers, are not steeped in attaining a comfortable middle-class socio-economic status. It is important to bear in mind that while the individual and communal projects explored in this chapter do the essential work of challenging normative notions of citizenship, they are produced by privileged individuals and groups compared to millions of other undocumented immigrants living in similar circumstances.
