ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is structured by three rubrics that take the form of sections. It creates that divisions in order to understand some of the various ways art and digital media are shaping, and being shaped by, the multiple and contested localities under the geo-imaginary of 'Asia-Pacific'. The book outlines some of the key themes, namely, art, new media, and social media in the Asia-Pacific at crossroads. Although each of these areas has gained attention, their convergence has been overlooked. This convergence represents new types of politics and engagement that cannot be ignored. Intimacy is not a fixed state but is both fluid and contingent on circumstances- personal, historic, cultural, and socio-technical. One way to understand the tensions around salient and transitory modes of intimacy is in terms of 'mobile intimacy'.
