As a predominantly oral-based culture, much of Southeast Asia has entered the twenty-first century with both old and new challenges, among them natural and man-made disasters, ongoing political unrest, and an economic downturn. Although globalization in the region has provided more accessible technology, it has also allowed us new ways to connect via social media, with digital devices and applications becoming an integral part of our lives. Accenture research reveals Southeast Asia as one of the regions adopting 'digital everything' quickly, enthusiastically and deliberately. It discovered that the digital landscape in this region has many common if divergent stands. The emergence of art in the age of social media in Southeast Asia has been closely connected with the sociopolitical and economical context. The first generation of Southeast Asian conceptual artists tried to break away from traditional media by encapsulating local materials with new art forms such as installation, performance, and, later, digital media.
