ABSTRACT

The introduction of antibiotic therapy in the 1940s was followed by the development of important cardiovascular drugs, diuretics, steroids, and other drugs that affected the central nervous system, including antidepressants and tranquilizers. The success of a pharmaceutical firm is the result of more than just the efficiency of its research and development laboratories because the input of research is essentially information that is used by manufacturing and marketing to make and to sell products. 'Corporate development' is a relatively new term that refers to a planned utilization of a corporation's creative resources to capitalize fully on existing business strengths, to adjust itself to the changing world, and to create growth opportunities. A strategic business plan is designed to convey the thrust of the business operation. The areas covered usually include an analysis of environmental forces and other factors that influence the success of the enterprise and indirectly impact on research and development.
