ABSTRACT

The basic purpose of library use instruction is to enable the library users, typically college and high school students, to learn how to access the resources that are available in the library. The current generation of bibliographic instruction programs should take into consideration the available microcomputer technology and fully exploit it—keeping in mind the basic objective of the library instruction program. The currently available technology might resolve that conflict in favor of the students. The curriculum of early colleges emphasized Greek and Latin precisely because studying Greek and Latin was supposed to strengthen mental and moral disciplines — many librarians still harbor such views. Downloading is the next logical step from online databases and database management programs. Everybody knows that word processors come into play and that they are a hundred-fold improvement over typewriters.
