ABSTRACT

Flow is examined, an optimum psychological state that is induced by pleasure reading more then any other reported activity. To reach flow a persons’ skill must meet the challenge, there must be clear goals, concentration, control, a loss of time and a temporary loss of self. The type of texts that most often create flow are fiction which is self-selected and on an appropriate skill level for the reader. The author discusses how public librarians can develop active and passive readers’ advisory services in libraries to assist adults in selecting high interest books to maximize reading experiences.
