ABSTRACT

Information technology might be compared to a plow being pulled by untamed horses. Trying to guide its direction and speed can seem hopeless, yet it yanks us along, often without protest. Using the literature of sociology, education, psychology, philosophy, and semantics, this article looks behind the wonders of technology to real and potential losses-communication, contemplation, connection, and community. It concludes with possible approaches to rethinking information technology in the context of these consequences.
