ABSTRACT

Hungary is a relatively small country with a population of fewer than 10 million. It has been a member of the European Union since 1 May 2004, and it joined NATO in 1999. The country has had a turbulent history indeed, with a democratic regime change taking hold in 1989. Since then, eligible Hungarian voters have been able to vote for winning party coalitions and in six parliamentary election campaigns: 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2010. In 2010, the Alliance of Young Democrats (FIDESZ), in coalition with the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP), won the elections and formed the government with an absolute majority, getting two-thirds of the parliamentary seats. In Hungary, two EP elections have been held, the first in 2004, the second in 2009.
