ABSTRACT

Journalists follow power and money. Brussels has both. Along with Washington, D.C., it is the other capital of global power. It is the headquarters of the European Union—the world’s biggest economic power, aid donor, and trading bloc with a budget of over €140 billion a year. It is also the seat of NATO, the most powerful military club on the planet. However, this chapter will focus on coverage of the EU, rather than NATO or Belgium, inasmuch as this is the primary focus of the vast majority of Brussels-based correspondents.
