ABSTRACT

This article chronicles a VIVA initiative that built on the experience of one academic library to make electronic resources available through distributed online catalogs of libraries in the consortium. Using analytic vended-MARC records, standardized by member libraries, the consortium expanded intellectual access to licensed databases. One of the original participants now works at Michigan, and expanded the project beyond VIVA. The article covers usability of vendor records and implications for 34internal workflow of participating libraries, and describes how librarians state-wide cooperatively deployed technology, cataloging, and programming expertise to manipulate MARC records and accommodate unique record loading requirements of participating institutions.
