ABSTRACT

The language of young children has been the subject of many studies. In the school where this research took place people were aware of the importance of speech, believing that classroom organization should include opportunities for children to discuss problems, think aloud, and work together in groups. The children selected, three girls and three boys, came from two parallel classes of 6-7-year-olds. They were given a simple explanation about the reasons for the project. A form of categorization system was developed and used to avoid making false assumptions. During the project the tasks were presented in various ways. In classroom discourse it is usually teachers who select which speaker shall contribute. The discussion started with Victoria as the only participant who had solved the problem.
