ABSTRACT

SUMMARY. There is a distinct relationship between the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Intravenous Drug (IVD) use. The low number of cases of the HIV reported in Alaska makes it important to realize the extent of the IVD using population in the state to determine the depth of the health problem. Once identified, IVD users with the HIV present some educational, treatment, and ethical dilemmas for care providers. Current and accurate information is essential to Alaskan communities, and Alaskan agencies must take a more active role in changing attitudes, while seeking updated information.
