The reason [Coleridge] considered Love’s Labour [’s] Lost as the first of Shakespeare’s plays was that it afforded the strongest possible presumption that Shakespeare was not an ignorant man, and that the former part of his life had been passed in scholastic pursuits, because when a man began to write, his first work will bear a colour or tincture of his past life, provided he be a man of genius.…
