ABSTRACT
SUMMARY. This article is a condensed version of the presentation given by Leif Utne. In his presentation, Utne addresses the poisonous tone of U.S. political debate, what media is doing to exacerbate the problem, and what media can do to foster civil dialogue. He discusses some of the factors that contribute to the development of the red/blue ideological chasm and cites some examples of groups that are working to bridge this divide and fulfill their democratic duties.
