      ABSTRACT

Postmodern ideas, practices, and perspectives are being integrated into the organizational cultures of science/technology libraries. Librarians are increasingly likely to be working with other librarians as well as faculty who are more comfortable with ambiguity, integration, collaboration, deconstraction, uncertainty, chaos, and fluid systems. These postmodern professionals are integrators and synthesizers, focused on learning, and uncomfortable with control and rigid or inflexible boundaries. Leadership in science/technology libraries needs this infusion of postmodern influences to be responsive to the dynamic information needs of all customers. Professionals in science/technology libraries may be or lean toward modern or postmodern, or be both modern and postmodern. The information services provided in science/technology libraries are basically identical to the various services provided in other libraries. If leadership in science/technology libraries identifies and communicates effectively with the disparate and occasionally unique elements in the library's environment, the professionals in positions of leadership need to be familiar with specific environmental complexities, patterns, and trends.
