ABSTRACT

Years after September 11, 2001, children nationwide experienced post-traumatic stress with symptoms of depression and anxiety as reported in NYU Today, 9/13/04 (pgs. 1, 4). Researchers concluded that watching the terrorist attacks on television or reading about them on the Internet or in the newspaper was sufficient enough to elicit these long-term symptoms. Children who had direct exposure to the event, in addition to the above, suffered also from separation anxiety and mistrust of others according to the report. Researchers recommended long-term interventions for the mental health reactions above and for substance abuse and aggression frequently noted in adults.
