ABSTRACT

Information technology (IT) is increasingly needed to remain competitive. This article presents a framework for designing management information systems (MIS) from a strategic perspective for the quick service restaurant industry (QSR). We provide guidance for planning and managing systems strategically using two existing frameworks: critical success factors (CSFs) for implementing systems that are strategic, and “stages theory” for managing these systems in response to changes in technology and in the marketplace. While the frameworks are not new, they can be useful in suggesting ways to design strategic information systems. Two case studies, developed from interviews with MIS directors of two quick service chains, are presented to describe the firms in the context of these two frameworks. Implications useful for strategic planning and system development have been developed from the case studies.
