ABSTRACT

Traditionally, there has been a dichotomy between librarians: catalogers and reference librarians. The cataloging unit has been responsible for both describing and classifying the library’s materials and for creating bibliographic record for the catalog. Reference librarians have been responsible for assisting library patrons in retrieval of the bibliographic records. The two realms have rarely interacted with each other. This article will explore my cross-training experience at the reference desk and my temporary assignment in the systems office.
