ABSTRACT

The whole idea of celebrating and sanctifying must be in a community where people are willing to create models that may defy the popular culture but are better suited for the way we really want the world to be. We learned, once again, the precious lesson of celebrating and sanctifying gay and lesbian relationships. One of our first educational forums was a joint program with our local New Jewish Agenda group to speak openly about the gay and lesbian Jewish experience. The members represent the Jewish community and our congregation in many political and communal groups working for the healing of the larger community such as the Privacy Rights Education Project; Food Outreach; Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays; and Effort for AIDS, to name a few. Jewish tradition teaches that the union of two separate souls in marriage is as great a miracle as the parting of the sea in the story of our exodus from Egypt.
