ABSTRACT

The most common responses to us as an interracial lesbian couple have been incomprehension, confusion, and confoundedness. In a society of few interracial relationships, which has a history of blatant interracial sexual violence, secret loves, and the sexual legislation of everybody, we are definitely not “normal.” St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Harlem is a congregation that is supportive and inclusive of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, as well as of persons of undeclared sexual orientation. As we entered the adoption process, we again were confronted with the differences of sexuality and race. Because we hope for a life that is also good, we are planning to have children, both biological and adopted. Growing up as girls in the society, we were both socialized to assume that we would have children. Understanding all people as children of God is a complicated and challenging proposition.
