Iconoclast that I am, I would not abandon the central wisdom of natural history from its inception—that concepts without precepts are empty, and that no scientist can develop an adequate “feel” for nature (that undefinable prerequisite of true understanding) without probing deeply into minute empirical details of some well-chosen group of organisms.
