ABSTRACT

The dispute over DNA fingerprinting is focused on a particular scientific problem with particular societal implications. The policy question is clear, and it coincides with the scientific question: How reliable is the technique as currently used? In contrast, global climate change presents a comprehensive array of scientific questions and policy challenges with broad implications for society. Global change is also frequently mentioned as a prime example of a policy problem that will only be solved with the benefit of authoritative scientific input. 1
