ABSTRACT

Humans typically view themselves as being “above” the rest of the animal kingdom, which can mainly be attributed to the development (of sophistication) of the human brain. The substantial increase in size and complexity of the cerebral cortex in relation to the rest of the brain has allowed humans to maintain a tight equilibrium or homeostasis among numerous areas at once. The “lower” (i.e., subcortical) areas of the brain are held in check by downward inhibitory control.
