ABSTRACT

Stand outside of many schools or universities and you’ll witness a common sight once classes finish. As students walk through the doors, they pull out their phones and the literacy practices begin. They check social media, follow links to web pages, use downloaded applications, play games, plug into their music and send messages. Their actions are fast, mobile, social and deeply involved with texts that range across and combine print, video, sound and image. Young people find these literacy practices meaningful and engaging; their activities serve their interests and are under their control.
