ABSTRACT

Greater Darfur with its three states (North, South, and West) occupies an area of 493,180.00 sq km in the western region of Sudan. It lies between 9° and 20° north latitude and 16° and 30° east longitude. It borders three other African countries (Chad, the Central African Republic, and Libya). This area, which nearly equals the size of France, is inhabited by 7,515,445 people distributed over the three states (Sudan Population Census Council 2008). Darfur's population is approximately 20 percent of the total population of Sudan. Based on patterns of livelihood, Darfur's population is composed of approximately 60 percent sedentary farmers, 20 percent nomadic herders (camel- and cattle-rearing Arabs), and 20 percent urbanites.
