ABSTRACT

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes that the elimination of intimate partner violence (IPV) will require building the capacity among practitioner organizations to prevent the initial occurrence of IPV. The practice of IPV primary prevention is currently in its formative stage. This chapter describes the history of the service and advocacy work of the State Domestic Violence Coalitions (SDVCs), organizations in which primary prevention is being integrated by the CDC DELTA Program. Further, this chapter uses evaluation data from CDC’s DELTA Program to show the variety of ways 14 SDVCs have built IPV primary prevention capacity within their organizations. The findings highlight the importance of tailoring capacity-building activities to each state’s unique circumstances and not assuming a “one-size-fits-all” approach to the primary prevention of IPV.
