ABSTRACT

One of my first memories is that of being surprised on seeing a photograph of a group of men in half-pants on the family altar, next to other sundry gods at an uncle’s house. As an average Hindu Bengali boy in Calcutta, I was used to the icons, idols and photographs of a variety of gods and saints on family altars (thakur-ghor), but I had never, before that day, seen one who wore shorts! I was taken by the sight and over the years it has become one of those quirky childhood memories that somehow retain its vibrancy and surprise, whilst all else from the time is largely forgotten.
