ABSTRACT

This research project explores the influence of North Africa in the tradition of Tajdeed in Hausaland, northern Nigeria. Tajdeed refers to a periodic renewal of faith. It is thus considered as rebirth, puritanism, fundamentalism, re-assertion, awakening, reformism, resurgence, renewal, reassurance, revitalisation, militancy, activism, integrism, millenninism, messianism, return to Islam, march of Islam, etc. Tajdeed has been a feature of most Islamic communities in the world. In Hausaland, there are records of persistent Islamic reformist and revival movements from the fifteenth century AD to the present.
