ABSTRACT

‘Employability’ is increasingly being seen as necessary for individuals to ensure continuous life-time employment in the face of decreasing job security offered by firms (Hillage and Pollard, 1998). To be employable to a range of employers, individuals must possess a range of personal qualities, notably reliability, flexibility and adaptability (Green and Turok, 2000), in addition to transferable skills such as commercial awareness, communication and problem solving (Moss and Tilly, 1996). Rather than offering ‘a job for life’, employers provide training and experience that will enhance workers' employability (Bagshaw, 1997).
