ABSTRACT
Helen Ross has said: “Having empathy with a child requires the ability to jump into the skin of the little child long enough to know what the child is feeling and the ability to jump out quickly enough so as not to be trapped there” (personal communication, 1974). This operational definition implies that empathy is a special mode of perceiving what the child feels that requires the observer to maintain an awareness of differentiation from the child.
