ABSTRACT
Val Plumwood, as Val Routley, one of the authors of Reading 1, criticizes deep ecology not from a ‘shallow’ human-centred position, but from an alternative form of deep green environmentalism. * Her criticisms are that deep ecology fails to recognize the distinctness and independence of things in nature, assimilates concern for others to a form of self-concern, and devalues concern based on personal connection.
