Most if not all individuals face two roles that they need to play in modern society: the  roles of the consumer and the citizen. The interconnection between consumerism and  citizenship has been accentuated by developments within nation states and between  them. The expansion of consumption in the last three centuries has occurred in a period  distinguished by the rise of nation states, political mass mobilization, along with new  ideologies and expansion of markets (Brewer and Trentmann, 2006). As the expansion  of markets is now proceeding on a global scale, the interconnection between consumerism and citizenship is being newly defined.
