ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the climates of the British Isles from the Last Glacial Maximum to the end of the prehistoric period, which ended some 2,000 years ago. All evidence of past climates during our period of interest comes from geological accumulations or sedimentary records and the biological remains that are. contained within them. Examples include ice-cores, speleothems, marine, river and lacustrine sediments, soils and glacial moraines. Biological evidence includes the remains of animals or plants, such as beetle parts, pollen, plant macro-fossils and tree megafossils (Table 5.1).
