      ABSTRACT

According to the Atkinson and Shiffrin model, information is held in STM by continually rehearsing it, and without rehearsal it will be almost immediately forgotten. The LTM is seen as a more passive store of information which is available for retrieval but not kept in an activated form. Earlier models of memory storage had seen the STM as little more than a ‘port of entry’ into the LTM, but in the Atkinson and Shiffrin model the STM store is also used for retrieval of memories from storage. This notion of STM as a focus of both input and output of memories is of central importance to the more recent working memory model (Baddeley and Hitch, 1974), which has developed the concept of the STM as a conscious workspace.
