ABSTRACT

At Brigham Young University we have an unusually high ratio [86:17] of student employees to regular staff employees when compared to other college or university libraries. Because the majority of our staff is student employees primarily interested in the completion of their own academic responsibilities, we have had to develop ways to encourage interest in and commitment to the job. Our philosophy is that if the student employees are happy in their job they will stay with us until they graduate. Cutting down on the hiring and training merry-go-round is high on our list of priorities. Clearly, motivated employees are more productive and more likely to stay with the organization. We aim to limit staff turnover and encourage growth in expertise and efficiency to maximize our employees’ value to our organization while promoting their job satisfaction.
