ABSTRACT

Jacksonville State University (JSU) is a medium-sized, public comprehensive university offering both undergraduate and graduate programs. It was founded in 1883 as Jacksonville State Normal School. Its purpose in 1883 was to provide a preparatory education for citizens of a rural Alabama county and the surrounding areas. The mission and the student population of the university have changed over time. The current enrollment is approximately 9,000 students. The University hosts students from all over the United States and from almost every corner of the globe. The institutional borders have expanded beyond its actual physical space. The library’s collection has also expanded in this way. It has grown from microforms and print resources such as books, journals, and newspapers to include electronic resources such as CD-ROMs, databases, web sites, e-journals, and e-books. In this same vein, reserve readings have also extended beyond the physical structure with the implementation of electronic reserves.
