ABSTRACT

Contemporary distance education (DE) comes in many forms, e.g., online via a course management system, at remote locations, video delivery/conferencing or a combination of two or more of these models. However, the underpinning for all of these delivery methods remains the same: technology. The same is true for library services in a DE environment. Because distance patrons are at the mercy of what is provided to them, i.e., they usually do not have the option of visiting the campus research library, academic librarians serving in a distance education setting should be proactive in applying available technologies to meet the needs of their patrons. However, the appropriate application of technology can potentially benefit all campuses and a wide variety of libraries.
