ABSTRACT

Randall Library has been in the Document Delivery business since the 1998–1999 academic year. We began our service on a small scale without any promotion by copying articles from our own journal collection that had been requested by faculty. Ironically, these requests were made by faculty who failed to check holdings in the library catalog prior to submitting interlibrary loan requests. This pilot project rewarded that behavior by filling those requests from our own collection and delivering these through campus mail much more quickly than if the requests had been filled through the ILL process. Despite rewarding faculty members’ propensity to overlook searching the library catalog, offering them the opportunity to ask for anything, allowing us set the acquisition method has become our gold standard. Needless to say, word of mouth communication spread quickly about this new service and requests increased significantly.
