ABSTRACT

The Copy Center at Southern Utah University (SUU) is located in the Gerald R. Sherratt Library (the campus’s single library facility), operating within the Access Services department structure and providing many valuable products and services to the campus. Although maintaining a copy center within Access Services is a somewhat unique situation that can present challenges outside the normal scope of typical operations, the SUU Copy Center is a prosperous, flourishing enterprise: it not only provides indispensable goods and services, it also serves as a way to attract more patrons and promote the Library’s excellent services and resources. Moreover, the Copy Center works closely with the other areas of Access Services (Circulation, Interlibrary Loan, Media/ Curriculum, and Serials) in training and sharing of the Library’s Work-Study students, thereby creating a more unified and cross-trained pool of workers. However, prior to attaining its current robust state, the Copy Center struggled for several years in a somewhat perplexing operational mode as it attempted to function in disparate locations and without a clearly defined role. At one point university administration strongly considered closing the Copy Center and eliminating this valuable service from the campus altogether. Yet, over the past few years the Center has been revitalized through a fortuitous combination of smart resolutions and good fortune that have coalesced to create a healthy, thriving setup that is beneficial beyond simply providing copy service to the campus.
