ABSTRACT
The conduct of Russian elections has increasingly come under the spotlight in recent years. In the first decade of Russian independence, the international community maintained a largely positive stance towards the Russian Federation. Keen to encourage its political transition, inconsistencies in the conduct of elections were glossed over in a broader narrative about continuing improvements in democratic standards. Since the turn of the century however, the tide has turned, and criticism of Russia’s democracy has become increasingly strident.
