ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the present situation of Tibetology in contemporary China and shows the achievements and latest developments of Tibetology in contemporary China. It highlights the characteristics of Tibetology in contemporary China, based on analyzing the main fields of Tibetology. China is the home of Tibetans and the cradle of Tibetology, with abundant academic resources and a long history. The chapter considers that the history of China’s Tibetology in the twentieth century can be divided into three periods: the history of minority nationalities, the history of the Tibetans, and Tibetan studies changes to Tibetology. There are five categories of units for Tibetological study in China: institutes, universities/colleges, presses/publishing houses, journals/periodicals, and websites. The chapter assesses the dynamics and excellent features of Tibetology in China. One of the focal points is the history of the relationship between local Tibet governments and the central governments of China, and the Tibet issues.
