ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how academics, journalists, policy makers, politicians and China studies experts in India have viewed Tibet so far as its influence on India-China relations in the broader context. It highlights the viewpoints of Chinese scholars on such issue, and also examines whether Tibet would continue to be an important factor impacting China Studies in India. The chapter provides a discussion on the history of Tibetan Studies or more precisely, Tibetology in India as well as Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies which vividly reflect the growing interest in Tibetan studies in India. It deals with the historical background of India’s interface with Tibetans and this leads to bringing in diverse viewpoints describing India’s Tibet policy. The chapter also highlights the viewpoints of Chinese scholars on the Tibet issue in Sino—Indian relations. Tibetan Studies in India has been in existence both as an element of Chinese studies or as a separate entity.
