      ABSTRACT

Mindfulness is recognized as a relevant component of the various third generation behavioral therapies, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT; Vallejo, 2006). Mindfulness initially was applied to alternative physiological and emotional procedures, but increasingly it has been applied to conventional psychotherapeutic approaches as well. These more recent applications have been supported by the publication of research establishing the benefit of mindfulness-based approaches to the treatment of physiological disorders such as: chronic pain (Elomaa, de C Williams & Kalso, 2009), fibromyalgia (Lush, Salmon, Floyd, Studts, Weissbecker & Sephton, 2009), and chronic fatigue syndrome (Surawy, Roberts & Silver, 2005). Further support has been shown by the publication of current research regarding the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions to the treatment of psychological disorders as well, such as: sleep disorders (Ong, Shapiro & Manber, 2008), anxiety disorders (Davis, Strasburger & Brown, 2007), addictions (Hsu, Grow & Marlatt, 2008), and several other psychopathologies (Gaylord et al., 2009; Ledesma & Kumano, 2009).
