ABSTRACT

Changes in the party models which have taken place in recent decades have affected diverse dimensions of party activity and organization. The evolution of very different parties points to the decline of the mass or social integration party model and to the gradual adoption of features that belong to party models focusing on electoral competition (Scarrow et al. 2000; Harmel 2002). In this sense, an important number of parties share, to a lesser or greater degree, the common features of electorally driven party models such as the catch-all (Kirchheimer 1966), the electoral-professional (Panebianco 1988), the modern cadre (Koole 1994) or the cartel (Katz & Mair 1995).
