ABSTRACT

All new lawyers should be competent in the fundamental skills of legal research, which suggests that legal research competency should be covered on the bar exam. The authors discuss the essential attributes of a bar exam and the methods that might be used to test for legal research competency. They recommend a multiple-choice testing method, but argue that before legal research competency can be tested on the bar exam, determinations need to be made about the definition of competency and the subject matter to be tested.
