ABSTRACT

International humanitarian law (IHL) is a set of detailed rules that seek to limit the effects of armed conflict. In particular, it protects those who are not, or are no longer, taking part in the fighting, and sets limits on the means and methods able to be used in warfare. A number of international treaties have been developed that aim to protect people and certain property in armed conflict and restrict or prohibit the use of certain weaponry. There are also general IHL principles or practices, which States accept as legal obligations, often referred to as customary international law.
