ABSTRACT

The title ‘Centre for Excellence’ has been used by organizations in just about every sector of business, media, governance and education across the world. Sometimes it is simply a promotional self-aggrandizement; sometimes it is a highly prestigious award from government or an international body. Being labelled a ‘Centre for Excellence’ can bring enormous rewards, great professional satisfaction and enhanced credibility within the sector and with potential partners and clients. Of course, it also brings a real responsibility to consistently deliver that excellence and maintain the ‘state-of-the-art’ dynamic. Such a label will commonly invite intense interest, generate numerous comparisons and precipitate inevitable criticism—so it can be both a blessing and a poisoned chalice!
