ABSTRACT
In this essay four main topics are examined. First, processes of national identification during football competitions are explored. The findings reveal that football has become an intensely nationalized event, yet they also seem to suggest that the sense of nationhood is not a monolithic construction, but a shifting and contextual issue which fluctuates over time and according to circumstances.
